Details
The world’s most hyped spice blend actually has surprisingly old roots.
Pumpkin spice – essentially a warm, aromatic blend similar to gingerbread spice – has taken the world by storm, especially in the U.S. It’s most famously known as the key to the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL), first launched in 2003 by a global coffee chain, which divided time into “pre-PSL” and “post-PSL” eras.
Traditionally, this spice mix included cinnamon, nutmeg, ground ginger, allspice, and cloves, and was mainly used in pumpkin pies. Over time, manufacturers started producing it as a ready-made blend called Pumpkin Pie Spice – a convenient alternative to mixing five or more spices. For example, in 1933 Thompson & Taylor released a blend of nine harmoniously combined spices, while McCormick's 1934 version still features four core spices.
Nobody knows for sure who first poured pumpkin spice into a milk coffee, but according to legend, during the PSL's development phase, coffee was poured over real pumpkin pie to see which blend best complemented the spices. The rest is history – over 425 million PSLs have been sold in the U.S. alone.
The enormous success of this spiced latte created a whole new product category. Today in the U.S., anything labeled pumpkin spice – from drinks to cheese, marshmallows, hummus, even mac & cheese – is almost guaranteed to sell.
