The macaron began to take shape around Venice in the 14th–15th centuries. Its name comes from the Italian word maccarone or maccherone, which at the time referred to any small sweet made from egg whites and ground almonds. Later, it became known in France, and today it stands as one of the most iconic creations of French pâtisserie.
