The gift of love
According to legend, the Totonac people of Mexico—inhabitants of today’s Veracruz region—were the first to cultivate vanilla, which they believed to be a divine gift. They told the tale of the mythical Princess Xanat, who refused to be forced into marriage and fled with her beloved into the forest. The ruler’s soldiers caught them and killed them, and where their blood touched the ground, the first vanilla orchids are said to have sprung. The Totonacs later passed the secret of vanilla to the Aztecs, who began using the plant’s fruit to flavor their cocoa-based drinks.
