The gift of love
According to legend, the Totonac people of Mexico—inhabitants of today’s Veracruz region—were the first to cultivate vanilla, which they regarded as a divine gift. They believed that the first vanilla orchids sprouted from the blood of the mythical Princess Xanat and her beloved, who chose death rather than a forced marriage. The Totonacs later passed on the secret of vanilla to the Aztecs, who began using the plant’s fruit to flavor their cocoa drinks.
