The gift of love
According to legend, the Totonac people of Mexico—inhabitants of today’s Veracruz region—were the first to cultivate vanilla, which they believed to be a divine gift. They told the tale of the mythical Princess Xanat, who refused a forced marriage and fled with her beloved into the forest. When the ruler’s soldiers caught and killed them, the first vanilla orchids are said to have sprung from the soil where their blood was spilled. The Totonacs passed the secret of vanilla on to the Aztecs, who began using it to flavor their cocoa bean drinks.
